Dewani boost as ‘hitman’ stricken

HONEYMOON murder suspect Shrien Dewani's battle to beat extradition was boosted yesterday after an alleged hitman was stricken with a brain illness.

The trial of Xolile Mngeni, 23 - accused of shooting Dewani's bride Anni with a pal - was halted.
South African authorities had hoped details would emerge in court to help their case to have Dewani, 31, hauled back from Britain for trial.

Cops allege Mngeni and co-accused Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, were paid by Dewani through a taxi driver middleman to kill Anni, 28.
Mngeni had two brain ops after collapsing in his cell. The opening of his Cape Town trial was adjourned until June 13.
A court source said yesterday: "Mngeni is in a bad way. There is serious concern that his health could affect efforts to get Dewani to face trial."
Care home boss Dewani, of Bristol, is in a secure mental hospital. An extradition hearing has been adjourned.
Mngeni and Qwabe claim they were tortured into confessing after the honeymoon couple were carjacked.
