Set up Earthlink mail account using incoming and outgoing server information

At the time of writing, only POP (Post Office Protocol) is supported on Earthlink mail accounts. All popular email programs use this protocol to download messages to the local computer. And all that’s required are the username and password of the account and the incoming and outgoing mail servers.
Please note that the incoming server is responsible for receiving messages while the outgoing (SMTP) server helps in sending out email (letters you’ve composed, replied to or forwarded).
  • Earthlink incoming mail server: pop.earthlink.net
  • Earthlink outgoing mail server: smtpauth.earthlink.net
For details and instructions on how to use the Earthlink mail settings, please refer the following links:
Please note: If you plan to download Earthlink email using POP to more than one computer, synchronizing the account across the different machines might be problematic. That, unfortunately, is the nature of the Post Office Protocol. However, the problem can be minimized by leaving a copy of the messages on the server and judiciously managing the accounts on the separate computers.
The ideal way out of this mess would be to employ IMAP but that’s not supported by the ISP. But with a little trick you can get Earthlink email via IMAP – read that blog post to know more.

Earthlink email

Earthlink , the popular ISP based in Atlanta, offers a variety of Internet access plans – from dialup to high speed cable; and a majority of these come with eight email address. Once set up, the Earthlink email accounts can be accessed via the webmail interface using just the browser program. This means you can get to your inbox from any computer in any part of the world via the Earthlink webmail interface!

Logging in at Earthlink webmail – webmail.earthlink.net

The web-based interface is accessed via the Earthlink login page. Point your browser to webmail.earthlink.net (click that link) and sign in by providing your email address and the account password. On successful login, you shall be shown Earthlink’s webmail through which you can compose and send messages and manage your email account.
Note for the newbie: Do not check “Remember my login on this computer” if you are accessing your Earthlink account from public machines like those in a library or an Internet cafe.

Features of the Earthlink webmail interface

The intuitively designed Earthlink’s webmail works on all popular web browsers. The layout is simple and uncluttered making it easy for the beginner to understand and work with the email account.
The interface is divided into several panes. The folders pane on the left is the long vertical column that has the list of default folders as well as those you have created to further segregate messages. The large column on the right shows the list of emails at the top and the contents of the selected message in a “preview” pane.
Each email account comes with standard “Inbox“, “Sent“, “Trash“, “Drafts” folders. Through the Earthlink webmail interface you can create additional folders which will be listed below the default ones. This helps customizing the email account and having messages organized as per requirements.
The Earthlink webmail toolbar, as I like to call it, gives you immediate access to common tasks: Reply, Reply all, Forward, Print, Delete, Move (to a specified folder), mark as Spam etc.

Earthlink webmail advantages

Here are some advantages of using Earthlink webmail:
  • Web-based email lets you check the account from any computer as long as it has an active Internet connection because the only software required is the familiar web browser.
  • Earthlink provides powerful virus and spam protection.
  • You can collate information of all your contacts at one place – Earthlink webmail. This information, just like email messages, will be available from any computer anywhere in the world.
  • Messages from other services can also be accessed at Earthlink webmail. Thus, if you have Gmail or AOL email addresses, you can add these accounts to Earthlink!

Forgot email password - tips and advice

Forgot email password - tips and advice

People write to me with all sorts of account login problems and 'I forgot the email password' is the most common. As you know, it's not possible to access the email account without the correct login details. But we are all human and, except for the lucky few, most of us are liable to forget important details.
How does this happen?
I've nailed it down to two things. The first is too much of reliance on memory cells and, the second, uninhibited use of the "Remember Me" or equivalent feature found just below the username and password fields on most sign in forms.
Fortunately, all popular services provide subscribers with a way to regain control of the account in the event they forgot the email password. Generally, you would be able to get the login information by having it sent to an alternate email or can reset the password by answering one or two security questions. Let us explore these options.

I forgot my email account password - how can I get it back?

Before we move forward, I would like you to check out two things - these should iron out the email password problem for 50% of users. Firstly, are you using the correct username and password combination? Remember, both of these have to be correct. Secondly, since the password is case-sensitive, make sure the Caps Lock and the Num Lk (number lock) keys are turned off; these are toggle switches. Most, if not all, keyboards have a small indicator light for these two.
If you still cannot login to your email account... read on.
Based on the innumerable emails I get on this issue, I can segregate the 'forgot email password' problem into the following categories - solutions and tips are provided for each.
  • Lost the password of a new email account
If it's a brand new email account on a service such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo, just forget about it - it will be closed by the service in sometime. Just get a new email address and, this time, remember to make a good password and take care of it well to prevent account hacking - read that article for more information. For an ISP email account, I suggest you contact the company support, identify yourself and get the login details.
  • Email password not working
I cite the two points I mentioned earlier on. The Caps Lock and Num Lock keys should be turned off and double check the username for which you are employing the password.
  • Had email account for a very long time but logged out accidently. Now I don't recall the password
Such an issue crops up when you've been using the "Remember Me" (or equivalent) feature found on most email sign in forms. I have always thought of this double edged sword. Yes, it saves time when accessing the account but since you don't need to enter the login details each time, you are likely to forget the email password. You can try resetting the password by either answering the security questions or having it sent to the alternate email address you provided at the time of sign up.
  • I know it's the correct password - someone's hacked into your account
If you are 100% sure that it's the correct password and still cannot access your account, there can be two scenarios. The service is either down (offline) which is unlikely but possible or someone has hacked into the account.
How did you account get hacked? Probable causes - sharing the password with others, you've been a victim of a phishing attack, the password wasn't strong enough etc. The last two are what I would put my money on.
Too many people just don't know how to make a password. They put their spouse name or something very obvious which can be guessed in a few tries. And phishing is certainly a bane of the internet. I advice never clicking on any link that was sent in an email message.

How to reset the email account password?

Companies offer different ways through which you can reset the information when you've forgotten the email account password. Having the login details or the reset instructions sent to an alternate email address that was provided at the time of creating the account is probably the easiest option. But it doesn't work for everyone. Many subscribers didn't put in an alternate email address on sign up because they were creating their first email account. Also, the alternate email address may not be functional anymore. In either case, you can still get the control of your account if you've lost the email password by answering the security questions. Yahoo!Mail, for instance, ensures that subscribers are kept abreast of the information they entered through regular prompts.
But what if you didn't use an alternate email address and don't recall the answers to the security questions? Again, the popular email services understand that some users may find themselves in this mess. The only solution is to contact the support staff. However, please remember that this is a thorny path. If it were so easy, anyone could get to your account username and password, right?

Delete AOL account - cancel free email address

Delete AOL account - cancel free email address

Unfortunately it's not easy to delete an AOL account. Obviously, no service likes to let go of a subscriber... but AOL takes this to a new level. I'm of the opinion that it's near impossible for casual users to even locate the pages they need to go through to cancel the free account, and even if they do, the procedure is not as straightforward as one you have to follow to delete a Gmail account, for instance.
Note #1: You can delete an AOL account only when it's still accessible. So if you've forgotten the AOL email password or the security question, you would need to reset or retrieve that information and then sign in at your account.
Note #2: Closing the AOL account means that you would no longer be able to receive messages. Make sure that this email is not used as the primary address of correspondence for other important accounts such as those of your bank.
Note #3: Any AOL premium services linked to this account will also be cancelled if the account is closed.
By the way, you can always think of forwarding AOL email messages to other accounts using either POP3 or IMAP. For example, you can add the AOL account on Gmail.

Yes, cancel my AOL account and delete all email

If the above warnings and suggestions haven't deterred you, here are the instructions on how to cancel the account. But before you proceed, please delete all your email stored at AOL - why take a chance?

  • Point your browser to bill.aol.com.
  • Enter the account username and password to sign in [Slide 1].
  • Provide the answer to the security question you had set at the time of making AOL email account [Slide 2].
  • From the I want to... section on the right, click "Cancel my billing" link [Slide 3].
  • Click "How do I cancel my free member account?" in the next page [Slide 4].
  • The screen will darken and a pop-up will be displayed. [Do you now realize why I mentioned that it's really difficult locating the links to delete an AOL account?]
If you go through the instructions, you'll find that there are three ways to delete an AOL email account.
    • Send an electronic Cancellation of Paid Membership and Conversion to Free Service request.
    • Download a PDF file of the cancellation request form, fill it up and send it to AOL address - yes snail mail! The pop-up has the complete mailing address.
    • Fax the completed form to AOL.
Ensure that the cancellation form is complete in all respects - thus, fields marked with the asterisk are required and should not be left blank. Generally AOL will take 72 hours to close the account.

Get MSN email address - free account

MSN email logoMSN is an abbreviation for "The Microsoft Network" which is a collection of web sites offering content (eg. news) and services (eg. Hotmail, Windows Live). MSN.com is one of the top web sites of the world; it ranks in the top five most visited internet properties in the United States. It now has a new logo and (hopefully) an improvement in the services including search and free email.
To get your free MSN email account, all you need to do is to register for it which takes less than five minutes. The account will enable you to take the full advantage of the services offered on this network. FYI, the MSN email address you get is of the format: YOUR-CHOSEN-USERNAME@msn.com. Just follow the steps below and refer the screenshots in the slideshow if you face problems.

Get your free MSN email address in a few minutes

The registration form for the free MSN email account is divided across two pages - one in which you choose the particulars of the email address and the other in which you provide personal details. The latter is to help personalize the MSN features. Let's get started.

  • Open a web browser - it's the program you are using to view this page.
  • Go directly to the MSN email address registration form by clicking on that link or type in https://accountservices.passport.net/reg.srf?ns=msn.com&sl=1&lc=1033 in the address bar.
  • You'll now see the sign up form with a few fields.
  • The first step is to choose a user ID - refer how to get a username of choice for more information - [Slide 1].
  • In the next two fields you need to provide a password - twice. It is imperative that you make a strong password for your MSN email account because you may lose the control of the account if it can be guessed (deciphered) easily - [Slide 2]. The "Password Strength" bar indicates whether the password is good or not. Don't strain yourself in trying to achieve the strongest password... just make sure it's not weak - [Slides 3 and 4].
  • But there is a possibility that you can forget the MSN email account password in which case, you can reset this information by identifying yourself. This is typically done by providing the secret answer to a chosen question or through an alternate email address. The next section in the registration form is exactly for this purpose.
Select a question from the drop down and type in the answer. Make sure this is not something obvious - [Slide 5].
FYI, the alternate email address field is optional because Windows Live understands that for some people the MSN email address would be their first - [Slide 6].
  • The last step is verification. You have to type in the characters (alphabet and numbers) that are shown. This is to prevent the abuse of the MSN services by hackers and automated programs - [Slide 7]. Click "Continue" when done.
  • Assuming the username you chose was available and all other inputs (including the verification) were correct, you will come to the second page of the registration form.
  • Simply provide all your personal information which should be an easy affair. Click the "Continue" button - [Slides 8, 9 and 10].
  • The last step to get your MSN email address / account is agreeing to the terms of service and the privacy policy. Type your prospective address in the blank field provided and hit the "Accept" button - [Slides 11 and 12].
  • Congratulations! You now have an MSN account! [Slide 13]
  • Click the "Continue" button on this page to be taken to your email account which is on the 'Live' web site - a part of the MSN [Slide 14].
To check the MSN email account in future, you would probably need to go through the Hotmail sign in page. You may also be interested in how to download the MSN email to your computer - refer the links below:
