JALANDHAR: Admitting that people along Kala Sanghia drain were living in troubled conditions, Jalandhar division commissioner S R Ladhar has recommended to the state government to set up special environment courts to try cases of industries that are found causing pollution.
It is for the first time that a senior government official has put down the plight of the people living along the drain in black and white. It is nearly impossible to live along this highly polluted drain and people are living in hellish conditions, Ladhar has written to chief secretary, while referring to his visit to the drain on May 18 when people led by environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal raised a bundh.
The commissioner has made it clear that while the law abiding industries should be assured all support, those cocking a snook at law should be brought to book.
100% treatment of sewerage by municipal bodies be ensured before discharge into drains, states the letter. Ladhar has also mentioned the high incidence of cancer and other serious diseases in Malwa and parts of Rajasthan and cancer train from Malwa to Rajasthan due to pollution of water while urging stern action against polluters.
Commissioner Ladhar in a meeting with DCs of seven districts of Majha and Doaba directed them to do special checking of the industries to check if they were complying with norms and to invoke Section 133 of CrPC where ever necessary.
Asking the DCs to regularly monitor the issue in their review meetings as special agenda item, commissioner said that drive against pollution of water channels would not only focus on Kala Sanghia drain but other water bodies as well.
