Two from UP gang held with firearms

MUMBAI: The crime branch on Thursday arrested two persons, allegedly belonging to the Aslam gang of Uttar Pradesh, who came to the city to deliver firearms to gangsters. The suspects, Afroz Khan and Mohammed Siddiqui, were caught from Kandivili.

Khan (32) Siddiqui (30) had seven weapons. "The arms are of high quality. The two had come to sell the weapons to a gangster in the city. However, we cannot disclose the name of the gangster," that was supposed to buy the consignment," said crime branch head Himanshu Roy.

Khan and Siddiqui arrived in Mumbai by a train. "The two claim that it is their first visit to Mumbai, but we are yet to verify the details," said a crime branch officer.

On reaching the city, Khan and Siddiqui posed as visa agents and stayed at a hotel in Kandivli. "They would meet their underworld contacts at the hotel," where they would discuss the rates," said Roy. Aslam, the police said, was wanted in several cases in UP. "He arranges for firearms from UP and Nepal for various gangs. His men come to Mumbai and sell the weapons at a higher rate here". For instance, a weapon, which costs RS 20,000 in UP, is sold for Rs 50,000 in Mumbai," said Roy."Various intelligence agencies have been trying to trace the supplier of weapons to the Mumbai underworld. Now, this is the first time that the Aslam gang's direct involvement has come to light."

A police team will be sent to UP for further investigation.

The city police last year had seized over 300 fire arms from various gangs in pre-planned operations and during nakabandis.
