Gulzar
Lyricist and writer Gulzar was in Delhi recently, but he was here for something that had little to do with Bollywood – a four-day theatre festival .
During a conversation, he stressed, "The process of writing for Bollywood, and writing for theatre, are very different experiences. I have enjoyed writing for Bollywood movies and have also written many books, but theatre will be a different medium for me. I feel that theatre is a one-to-one relationship between people, and more awareness needs to be created among the younger generation about theatre."
Ruing the lack of attention for theatre, he said, "It's sad that theatre is losing its importance. There are so many talented theatre artistes, but they only gained fame and recognition after joining Bollywood. Similarly, kitne logon ne padha hai meri likhi hui kitabon ko? Logon ko sirf yeh pata hai ki maine Hindi cinema mein kaunse gaanon ke lyrics likhe hain."
Some of his popular plays, part of the festival that he's here for, are a collage of his poems and stories. Today, the last day of the festival, there will be an evening of Gulzar reciting poetry. Said Gulzar, "I have translated Marathi and Bengali poetry, which I will be narrating during the poetry session."
When asked about his daughter Meghna, who recently had a baby, he smiled and replied, "My daughter is busy enjoying motherhood and bringing up her baby, who's now a year old."
