PUDUCHERRY: Congress splinter group All India NR Congress floated by former chief minister N Rangasamy after quitting Congress ahead of 2011 is set to emerge victorious in the 2011 assembly elections with the AIADMK in tow, ending 12 years of Congress rule in the Union territory.
The results for the 18 of the total 30 seats in the Union territory have been declared and the NR Congress led alliance has bagged 12 seats while the Congress and its allies have managed to garner just six. NR Congress alliance has emerged as a single largest party with nine seats and its ally AIADMK bagged three. The alliance is leading in three other constituencies. The Congress managed to secure only four seats with chief minister V Vaithilingam, home minister E Valsaraj and revenue minister Malladi Krishna Rao posting victories.
Prominent losers include welfare minister M Kandasamy and former chief minister and DMK convener R V Janakiraman.
Kandasamy lost the battle to his rival candidate from NR Congress P Rajavelu by a narrow margin of 1,468 votes. Rajaevlu polled 12,933 while Kandasamy 11,465. Janakiraman, who lost 2006 polls to debutant Om Sakthi Sekar of AIADMK, lost the battle again to him by a margin of 4,518 votes. Sekar polled 13,301 votes while Janakiraman 8,783.
