Delhi Police's midnight raid to evict Ramdev was not spontaneous. The cops had decided to detain the yoga guru two days back after the Special Branch gave inputs that the agitation would attract unprecedented crowds and trigger law and order problems.
In fact, the police were spying on Ramdev immediately after he landed in Delhi on Wednesday. Sources said several intelligence officers were moving around in four Innova cars to keep a tab on Ramdev's movements. And when they got the green signal to raid the Ramleela Ground, they did not even wait for the morning. They raided the ground when most his supporters were sleeping and Ramdev was busy at a meeting with his core group.
Even though police claimed they had sent three letters to Ramdev on Friday and Saturday asking him to only perform yoga, he did not reply and continued mobilising the crowd. The police had in fact made arrangements in advance to remove him.
The police said Ramdev was informed around 11 pm on Saturday that his permission to continue his agitation has been cancelled. But by that time, the blueprint for the raid had been laid. Over 5,000 police officers, including 12 companies of Delhi Police , three companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF), two companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos and local police were briefed by senior police officers to get ready for action .
Police even surrounded the Ramlila ground by 11 pm and several buses and tempos , heading towards the ground from Haryana, Rajasthan , Uttar Pradesh and Punjab were sent back from the borders. Police had even arranged buses to drop supporters at railway stations and bus stands in advance before launching the strike. A senior police officer said, "There were talks in the police headquarters since June 2 that Baba Ramdev would be detained as we knew he is definitely not going to hold a Yoga camp" . Police had ammo ready and were in battle-gear wearing vests and helmets. Police even kept some ambulances on standby, because department knew there could be a scuffle.
