Chief Minister Mayawati has welcomed the Supreme Courts move to take suo moto cognizance of the police crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his supporters at the Ramlila ground on Saturday night.
Mayawati said that the SC's move to issue notices to concerned officials to explain the midnight drama and forcible eviction of Baba Ramdev and his supporters was a welcome step.
Mayawati said that the SC's move would ensure that inhuman treatment would not be meted out to those protesting peacefully.
Mayawati had on Sunday at a party rally in Bangalore said that the SC must take suo moto cognizance of police atrocities on supporters of Baba Ramdev and issue notices to the concerned people. She had said that the National human Rights Commission, Women's Commission and SC/ST Commission should be directed by the SC to probe the Ramdev incident so that use of force on those protesting peacefully and democratically should not be reoccur.
She condemned the manhandling of women, children and elderly at the Ramlila ground by the police on Sturday midnight when people where sleeping peacefully.
Interestingly, while Mayawati has been condemning the police action on Baba Ramdev her government had refused permission to Ramdev for continuing his protest in NOIDA.
After the Delhi police evicted him from the Ramlila ground he was taken by a state shopper to his ashram in Haridwar. Later Ramdev tried to proceed towards Delhi again to resume his protest fast in NOIDA, which falls, in the NCR region. But the UP police stopped his cavalcade at the UP-Uttarakhand inter state border.
He was asked by the police to return or face arrest as the administration did not want him to stage his protest in NOIDA which falls within UP and he also did not have permission to hold a dharna there.
