The Rotary’s BowelScan campaign is backed by all Rotary Clubs in the south-east, including Narooma’s club, which, as per Narooma BowelScan coordinator Max Reid, “gets right behind this big public health campaign every year.”
Stressing the need and effectiveness of BowelScan, Reid referred to statistics that show “one in twelve people in Australia will develop bowel cancer by the time they’re 85.” As such, bowel cancer is fast becoming most common internal cancer in Australia, but “also one of the most curable if detected early.”
Technically speaking, the $10-priced BowelScan kits – which are available till April 2, from pharmacies in Narooma, Bermagui and Cobargo – test for faecal blood. After the quick and easy test that can be done at home, the samples are dropped in the envelope back to the pharmacy.
The samples are then picked up from the pharmacies; and testing is conducted by Hunter Area Pathology Service; and users are informed about their results by mail. What’s more, confidentiality is maintained, always!
This time round, the last day for return of kits to pharmacies is Saturday, April 16!
