A man whose face was recorded by a security camera as he pocketed it at a Fountain City, Wis., laundromat in April was arrested recently after allegedly burglarizing a Winona building, according to authorities.
Police received a call April 23 that a man police eventually identified as Mathew Robert Kieffer, 30, had cut copper plumbing and wires out of a building’s basement.
The caller reported that he went into the basement and saw Kieffer cutting something out of a floor joist.
When the man confronted Kieffer, Kieffer walked out of the basement and ran away, according to court documents.
Officers caught up with Kieffer and arrested him. They searched him and found two three-inch pieces of copper conduit, various tools, a glass pipe and a hollowed-out Crayola crayon, court documents show.
The pipe and crayon contained a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine, according to court documents.
Officers also noted that Kieffer had taped the soles of his shoes with electrical tape, which they allege was so he could avoid leaving footprints, court documents show.
Winona police worked with Fountain City officers and their images from the laundromat’s security system to identify Kieffer as a suspect in the
April 17 incident at the Fountain City laundromat, where Kieffer allegedly loitered in the business for about a half-hour and then stole a security camera.
Kieffer has been charged with first-degree burglary in Winona County District Court. It’s unknown whether he’s been charged in Buffalo County related to the video camera theft.
Daily jail logs show Kieffer remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday before Winona County Judge Nancy Buytendorp.
