Family and friends said goodbye to an Appleton solider killed in Afghanistan.
Funeral services were held Thursday for Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Hermanson. The 22-year-old died April 28 in Afghanistan of wounds inflicted by small-arms fire during an attack by insurgents.
The Appleton Post-Crescent reported the family declined to allow media coverage of the visitation or funeral, except for a single shared camera to record the honor guard ceremony.
Visitation was held at Christ the Rock Community Church in Menasha. A funeral service with full military honors followed.
Hermanson was deployed in November. Hermanson died about a week before his first wedding anniversary.
